How to Enquire About TDS Challan Status Online Using CIN and TAN View

TDS challan: Checking the status online


Checking the status online of your TDS challan can be done through two modes: TAN view and CIN view.


TAN view simply stands for Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number, which is a unique number assigned to every deductor. Here’s how you check the TDS challan status through the TAN view:


  • Step 1:


    Visit the official website of the Income Tax Department or simply open the Tax Information Network (TIN)-NSDL portal.


  • Step 2:


    Once you are in, select the TAN-based view, under ‘For Tax Payers’


  • Step 3:


    You will now to have to provide TAN details and the challan tender date for a required period that should be within a range of 24 months.


  • Step 4:


    Once you have selected this option, a text file with the following details can be downloaded:


    • CIN
    • Major Head Code with the description
    • Major Head Code
    • The Nature of the Payment that has been made.
  • Step 5:


    When you now enter the CIN amount, the system will confirm if it is in sync with the information that has been uploaded by the bank. You can then use this file to verify the challan details. You need to:


    • Import the challan file into File Validation Utility
    • Validate the quarterly e-TDS or TCS
    • FVU provides matching stats for the challan details.

Note: Remember that you can check the status of your TDS challan only for a specified period that can not be more than 2 years/ 24 months from the current date.


The CIN view deals with the method of checking TDS challan status using the challan identification number. You can find your challan identification number on the challan receipt issued by the bank.


Here’s how you can check the TDS challan status through the CIN view:


  • Step 1:


    Visit the official website of the Income Tax Department or simply open the Tax Information Network (TIN)-NSDL portal.


  • Step 2:


    Next, you have to Next, you have to click on ‘CIN based view’ which is under ‘For Tax payers.


  • Step 3:


    Once you are in, select the method as CIN view.


  • Step 4:


    the next step you will be able to view various details such as:


    • BSR Code
    • Date of Deposit
    • Challan Serial Number
    • Name of Taxpayer
    • Received by TIN
    • Confirmation of the entered amount.
  • Step 5:


    Once you have provided the details, you will be able to see the TDS challan status on the screen.


TDS challan: All you need to know


Before you leave, let’s clear the fundamentals of the TDS challan to help you understand the process of downloading and checking the TDS challan status better.


Remember that the TDS challan is a receipt generated when you make an online payment of TDS (tax deducted at source). TDS challan online were introduced in 2004 to streamline and simplify the collection of TDS by offering a simple online portal.


At present, challan number ITNS 281 is used to pay TDS. You can download the TDS challan at the time of making the payment for TDS. However, if you have failed to download the TDS challan after paying, here’s how you can download it later:


  1. Through the income tax portal

    • Step 1:


      Visit the official portal of income tax e-filing.


    • Step 2:


      Login into your account with your TAN number.


    • Step 3:


      Select the “e-file” option and then select the “e-pay tax” option.


    • Step 4:


      Next, you have to select the “payment history” menu and you will be able to see the TDS challan payments you have made.


    • Step 5:


      From here, you can download the challan or simply view it.


  2. Through OLTAS

    • Step 1:


      Visit the TIN-NSDL portal.


    • Step 2:


      Once you are in, select “OLTAS” from the “services” menu.


    • Step 3:


      Select the “challan status enquiry”.


    • Step 4:


      In the next step, you have to select either a CIN-based view or a TAN-based view.


    • Step 5:


      You will be able to view and download your TDS challan.


Conclusion


TDS, or tax deducted at source, was introduced by the government to collect tax at the source of income. This type of tax is deducted by the payer while making payment to the payee , and then the deducted amount is remitted to the government. TDS challan is a receipt of this tax deduction that is crucial for every taxpayer liable to pay TDS.
