What about the workspace? A recent ruling by the Supreme Court of India says a two-year childcare leave along with the maternity leave of 180 days is a constitutional mandate for women employees. However, data shows 73% of women leave their jobs post-childbirth, 50% quit to look after their children, 48% leave after rejoining, and 30% suffer from pay cuts after maternity leaves[3]. According to the World Economic Forum’s recent report, against every Rs 100 earned by Indian men, women earn Rs 40, taking India to the 129th position among 146 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index[4].

In India, the concept of gender inequality is deep-rooted in the society’s mindset and norms, visible at home, in the workplace, and in public places alike[5]. To eradicate the gender gap in the future, how about raising your children in a different environment?

Here’s what you can do to make sure that gender equality starts at home.

Sharing the work

The Covid-19 pandemic saw Indian families share domestic chores between men and women. Carry forward the practice and divide the household work not just between the husband and wife, but among the children too. Let gender equality for children remain a constant choice[6].

Empower your children

Talk to your child about gender gaps and women’s rights. Explain to them how gender equality right from childhood can make the world a better place. This can teach your son to value women and their rights equally as he grows up, while your daughter can feel more confident[6].

Breaking stereotypes

Let your children understand that ideas like ‘Men don’t cry’ or ‘Mothers should cook’ are nothing but stereotypes and conditioning imposed by a patriarchal society. Researchers say, boys and girls start believing in these stereotypes within the age bracket of 3-10 years. Hence, early introductions of gender equality for your children can be helpful[6].

Putting a stop to body shaming

Dictated by the society, a lot of people believe in beauty standards, which can hinder gender equality for children too. There’s an overwhelming practice to judge people by their looks and body shapes and taunt those who don’t fit the benchmarks. Make your children aware of how body shaming harms a person and that beauty lies in the mind and behaviour. However, remember to set an example as parents[6].

Listen to your child

Today’s youth is far more informed and outspoken about rights. Think of how Malala Yousafzai stood tall for child education and Greta Thunberg called out world leaders for climate action. Trust these positives, and change your views if needed to make the world a better place, ensuring gender equalities for children[6].

Let’s make this world a gender-equal land together!
